Australian shoe shopping

When I dream of living overseas, I dream of being able to shop in many different places, having access to shops full to the brim with stylish and fashion forward shoes. Shoe shopping in Australia is ridiculously difficult with prices for those fashion forward shoes so skyhigh, and the cheap knockoffs, falling apart in less than a week.

The few and far between shoe designers such as Tristan Blair provide a slightly more affordable quality shoe, but it's still out of reach of most fashionable young women living on salaries that cannot afford such spending. Alex and Alex are a famed label providing some great shoes, but the variety can leave a lot to be desired. Stockists are hard to find, although prices are very reasonable.

Topshop is not Sportsgirl. Let's not kid ourselves... David Jones and Myer offer some great options from some well known brands but they are not H&M, Miss Selfridges or Urban Outfitters...

Australia is missing out.

American Apparel just opened a new store down the road from my work, but I hate AA. It doesn't appeal to me, but obviously it appeals to many. I can only dream of an Australian outlet for Urban Outfitters or H&M. Dream on it seems.

The boutique shops we rely on provide us with some great options but this is not nearly enough when in comparision to what Londoners or New Yorkers are offered, our style is still among the best (debatable I know).

I hope to one day be a shoe designer and have my own boutique, but to have the reach of a large brand and stock amazing brands in a large store, would be the ultimate (and probably unachievable) ideal.

Shiny shiny shiny

Juicy Couture are known for standing out among the crowd of brands, and these ballet flats are perfect for those days when you just want to stand out.

The studded ballet flat available from eluxury.com are just adorable. They look perfectly comfortable and well formed to fit most feet. Only wear these on dry ground as the suede sole will not hold up to extreme weather.

Features include
  • Soft grained leather
  • Gold studs allover shoe
  • Rounded toe
  • Gold metal bow
  • Slightly elasticized sides
  • Contrasting metallic leather patch at heel back
  • Sumptuous suede lining
  • Metallic grained leather padded insole
  • Suede sole with rubber toe and heel patches

Perfect for your weary foot!
It's shoes like these that make me want to spend all my rent money and eat noodles for a week.

Alexander McQueen black leather peep toe pumps with a 13cm heel and 2cm concealed platform. Features an ivory stripe across toes and heel. The concealed platform will increase the comfort of these stunning heels. The shape from the heel to the toe is divine and will make any pair of feet look simply amazing. (Net-A-Porter).

My next pair of Roccos...

I want a new pair of Rocco's, not because I need them, but because I love my other pair but it's fun to have more than one?!

I think I've decided on purple suede, like these sneakers, the same shape as the pair I have already (see above) but with a higher heel (maybe 2 inches). I'm not yet decided on the colour of the heel, but possibly silver. I do love my silver.

Won't be getting these until early next year, it's a five week wait but it will be worth it.

New shoes!

I went to the Nude Footwear sale in Prahran over the weekend, and luckily got there early enough to snap up some bargains. Nothing was over $50 and a lot of the styles were current. Too bad I'm not sample size (37) because there was some really great stuff there.

The Lucy shoe in white. It's a butterfly over the toe and a comfortable slingback.

The minnie shoe in white porcelain leather and gold. A narrow sexy pump that is just perfect with jeans or the prettiest dress. Reasonably comfortable but need to break in a bit more...The other pairs of shoes I bought over the weekend (no photos just yet, will upload later) include red pumps with a splayed snakeskin strap across the top of the foot and a black polka dot peeptoe pump (not from Nude). Will post photos tonight!

Fashion swapping

It's all over the globe, making waves and helping contribute to sustainability in fashion.

The idea is swapping instead of shopping - contribute to a charity and have a damn good time too!

It's only in Melbourne I am afraid, but who knows, one day, we might see For Better Or Purse spread all over the world!

Gals in Melbourne, unite! Check out the Blog, the Myspace, or the Facebook Group.

Spread the word!!!

My faves at Urban Outfitters

I always hope Urban Outfitters will magically open in Australia. I absolutely love their stuff, it's so me, but unfortunately every order takes time and a lot of $$$, but it's well worth it.

My favourites on Urban Outfitters at this very moment...

The Jeffrey Campbell Graduated Patent Heel. A most daring design in shape and colour, but very easily worn with most wardrobes.

The sweet and simple Dolce Vita Sass Colorblock Pump is perfect for any summer dress but also perfect for the winter outfit that needs some freshening up. I love the shape, it looks elegant but not too refined for the rock-chick, and the heel is just the right height.
When you look at the patent leather proliferation in the shoe market, it seems like it will never end. But alas, I think Patent is here to stay for much, much longer. The Patent Anna Wedge is just so perfect...

And that's a wrap!

Ah my pretty!

So maybe you're not into fishscales and taxidermy, maybe a bit of soothing cream leather is more your style?

The Peaches gorgeous ballet flats (with slight heel) is by Loeffler Randall and the style and shape is perfect for your next princess moment.

By contrast, the Hilary Kilt Flats have a homely feeling, but a stylish one. Perfect for work, or adventurous days with a handsome man.

These are available now (a few places online or check out the store locator on the site.)

Eley Kishimoto

There's something about all of Eley Kishimoto's shoes that just grabs me. I can't explain it, but she has this eye for detail and shape that is just perfect.

The black patent and suede fishscales wedge. What's good about this shoe? The wedge, it's comfortable and easy to wear. The shape of the toe is flattering and so current, but it won't age either. Will look totally amazing with jeans or your best skirt. The touch of patent is so alluring and the fishscales, well I'm speechless, it's a detail that I don't see often in shoes that I like. Infact I generally dismiss any kind of animal skin (that's not the normal type of leather) as a bit dare I say 'tacky'. I stand corrected, it can be done with style.

It reminds me a bit of Julia Deville's jewellery, maybe the combination can be taken even further?

Ok so it's not the same as fishscales, but Eley Kishimoto's designs just have the same feeling about it...

Creativity

I love a bit of creativity in fashion, it's always the small detail that will get me, as I've mentioned before. And one of my special favourites is eye-catching socks.

As seen on The Sartorialist...

What is it about the eye-catching detail of this that I like? I really think it adds a bit of sparkle to an outfit. The photo is obviously very interesting in that we can't see the rest of the outfit, so we're not sure how much of an influence these socks are. The coat looks like fur (faux or maybe not) so my guess is maybe the socks wouldn't be so striking if the photo was a full body shot. In any case, in the sea of black shoes, the aqua and white print stands out. Kudos to this gal!

Something a little different

It's the little detail in a shoe that will capture my spirit, my heart and my wallet.

Kenneth Cole
I love the flash of red, the shape of the peeptoe (not showing too much toe is oh so elegant) and the inside cut out. Go for a snug fit so the shoe stays on your foot. This material and the shape could be tricky to wear if the shoe was purchased in a size too big.
Jean-Michel Cazabat
While metallic is still going strong in fashion circles, the mod shape of this shoe makes all the difference. You don't need long skinny legs to pull this off, just get your proportions right. I'd recommend a shortish but not tight skirt and a simple singlet for maximum effect.

Via Spiga
I'm obsessed with the pinhole cut trim on shoes. It's old-fashioned but can look really modern with the right outfit. I love the low strap and the medium heel. This shoe gets my absolute vote for trans-seasonal easy-on-the-eye- dressing. Go forth and buy!!!

Best of online

If you're like me and find a spare minute or ten at work to browse your favourite online shopping destinations, but don't always have time to peruse everything that is available, check out my favourite things online RIGHT NOW!

The Dior Samourai Bow Pump in off white. Features smooth calfskin and a rounded toe that is elegant yet edgy. Twisted leather bands and a thin leather bow complete the stylish shoe. Made in Italy, you know you want them.

From Jimmy Choo, perhaps the most elegant and refined of shoe designers, the most sharp and practical black leather pumps. These are an absolute classic and the proportions looks perfect for all day wear. Snap them up!

Sorry about the quality of the image - but these are just to die for. Manolo Blahnik Patent Pump with pinhole cut trim and a gorgeous heel that will leave you towering over your girlfriends. Stylish, classic and comfy, ALL IN ONE!

Colour in your life

Found a great article that analyses the effects that colours have on us. Interesting read considering my love of psychology in fashion.

Rock and Roll, Mother...

F**ker?

Miss Bunny Shoes

Miss Bunny Shoes are all that a rock and roll or party princess gal needs to find. Take your pick of a gorgeous range of second hand shoes refurbished and renewed for your dancing feet. Combining fashion and thought for the environment is always eye-catching. When you can look this good for about $US80, why not??

Buckle down the hatches

Who What Wear Daily had a nice article a few days ago about ankle boots with buckle details.

I've always been a massive fan of the buckle detail. It can sometimes look too much for an outfit, but a buckle on the bag or the shoe brings a quick polish to the outfit, just like a cinch belt or a chic haircut.

Melbourne is nearing it's warmer months, and so the practicality of the purchase of an ankle boot can be easily rationalised. Melbourne is known for it's 4 seasons in 1 day phenomenon!

I'd love a pair of turquoise suede ankle boots...

There's something about tortoiseshell

There is something about these wedges that makes me want to don a pair of matching tortoiseshell sunglasses and spend a week in the Hamptons. And I'm not even American!!

Get them from Revolve Clothing

It's all about the wedge

The trend in heels has definitely been bulky for some time now, and I think that trend is here to stay! The humble wedge has spent the better part of 2 years as a major trend in fashionista circles. There are many benefits to the wedge, but the comfort associated to wearing a good pair of wedges compared with the ageless stiletto is second to none.

Whether your choice is anadulterated flat, a shiny patent boot or suede platform heels, the wedge makes the all important style oh so easy to wear all night long.

Here comes Summer!

I love thinking about summer and the cute and colourful outfits I'll be wearing. Looking through the Australian Designers collections for Spring/Summer 07/08, we can see that heavy sandals and platform soles are around to stay.

Kirrily Johnston

Life With Bird

Tina Kalivas

The figure hugging silhouettes shown in many of the upcoming designers collections lend themselves to heavy, outfit balancing shoes. The heels are high, the straps are heavy and the legs are bare.

And Internationally...

From the Spring 2007 shows internationally, we can see that the humble Mary Jane will definitely play a major part in Australia's upcoming summer.

Chloe

The heavy square toe heel, that resembles a court shoe worn by sensible types has transformed into a disco party heel at Chloe.
